SCARCE 1794 LAND GRANT SIGNED BY REVOLUTIONARY WAR HERO AND GOVERNOR OF SOUTH CAROLINA WILLIAM MOULTRIE

(SOUTH CAROLINA) MOULTRIE, William. Document signed. South Carolina: August 1794; February 1794. Two original ivory leaves: one measuring 15-1/2 inches by 12-1/2 inches with small fold, cloth tie; one measuring 8-1/2 by 7 inches, both completed in manuscript in the recto, manuscript on the verso. $1500.

1794 land grant, signed by Revolutionary War General William Moultrie as Governor of South Carolina, with original cloth tie, accompanied by the separate official document showing a hand-drawn survey map of the land grant.

The collection contains a scarce official August 1794 document of the State of South Carolina signed by William Moultrie as governor, granting to Robert Brodie and his heirs a 1000-acre tract of land in the District of Camden, pursuant to a 1791 act: “establishing the mode of granting the lands now vacant in this state.” Accompanying the document is a second official document (partial leaf with excised lower portion) dated February 15, 1794, containing a hand-drawn map of the land granted to Brodie. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, William Moultrie found himself as colonel of the 2nd Regiment in 1776 defending the Fort on Sullivan’s Island. “Here on June 28, 1776, with 400 men and 31 guns, Moultrie received the attack of the British fleet. His courage and judgment were vindicated… and Moultrie shortly afterward was promoted to brigadier-general in the Continental service… [In 1778] Moultrie saved [Charleston] by a rapid and skilful retreat, and by a determined stand against surrender… [He was] made major-general in October 1782” (ANB). Moultrie served twice as governor of South Carolina, from 1785-87 and 1792-94. Landowner Brodie, born in Scotland, settled in South Carolina where he became a prominent merchant. Large document signed on the verso by Peter Freneau, Secretary.

Large document with faint foldlines, minor edge-wear, soiling to verso; smaller document separated along vertical tear, edge-wear. Scarce, in extremely good condition.
