Under Western Eyes

Joseph Conrad

"THE TREACHERY AND VIOLENCE OF REVOLUTION"

CONRAD, Joseph. Under Western Eyes. London: Methuen, (1911). Octavo, original red cloth, uncut. $750.

First edition of Conrad’s political novel, “set in Switzerland and Russia and centered on the tragedy of student Razumov, caught up in the treachery and violence of revolution” (Drabble, 225).

Published between the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917, Under Western Eyes was to prove an eerily prophetic book. It first appeared serially in the North American Review and the English Review beginning in 1910, though Conrad made numerous revisions for book publication. With 32 pages of publisher's advertisements at rear dated September 1911. Without very rare dust jacket. Keating 88. Wise 19.

Scattered infrequent foxing to text, a bit of soiling to cloth, gilt bright. An extremely good copy.
