Recent Paintings by Vanessa Bell

Vanessa Bell

"HER PICTURES STAND FOR SOMETHING, ARE SOMETHING AND WILL BE SOMETHING WHICH WE SHALL DISREGARD AS OUR PERIL"

(BELL, Vanessa) WOOLF, Virginia. Recent Paintings by Vanessa Bell. February 4th to March 8th 1930. London: The London Artists' Association, 1930. Octavo, staple-bound as issued, original printed cream paper self-wrappers; pp. 6. $1250.

First edition of this scarce 1930 catalogue to Vanessa Bell's paintings at The London Artists' Association, with a four-page foreword by her sister, Virginia Woolf.

Vanessa Bell, Virginia's older sister by four years and a talented member of the Bloomsbury Group, of course famously designed all the dust jackets for her sister's Hogarth Press publications. However, she was also a fine artist, whose paintings were regularly presented at gallery exhibitions. Admitted to the Royal Academy for her talent and taught by John Singer Sargent, Bell separated herself from the pre-Raphaelite artists favored by her mother's family. "As an artist she may be accounted one of the most gifted of her time in Britain, blessed as she was with an instinctive sense of colour and design" (DNB). Only two of Vanessa Bell's catalogues were released in this format; this one is extremely scarce in collectible condition. Kirkpatrick B10.

Fine condition.
