“HIS GRAND EXCELLENCY WAS THIS, THAT HE WAS GENUINE”: FIRST EDITION OF LEWES’ BIOGRAPHY OF GOETHE, HANDSOMELY BOUND
(GOETHE) LEWES, G[eorge] H[enry]. The Life and Works of Goethe. London: David Nutt, 1855. Two volumes. Octavo, mid-20th century three-quarter blue morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.

“Of all modern men, Goethe is the most universal type of genius” (Phillips). Having spent time in Germany with his lover Marian Evans—later to achieve fame as George Eliot—critic and philosopher Lewes returned to England in March 1855. “His Life of Goethe, finished at Weimar, appeared in the following November with marked success, and has become the standard English work upon the subject… It shows [Lewes’] characteristic merits of clear good sense, independent criticism and unflagging vivacity.,, The book… has merits which have seldom been equalled in similar work” (DNB). Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait of Goethe in each volume. Allibone, 1089. Faint owner signature in Volume II.
Minor soiling to rear board of Volume I. A handsome and very nearly fine copy.
