“HIS WORK CHANGED, AS WELL AS DOCUMENTED, HISTORY”: VINTAGE EUGENE SMITH PHOTOGRAPH OF THE 1944 CHICAGO CONVENTION
SMITH, W. Eugene. Photograph of delegates at the Chicago Democratic Convention. Chicago: Life, 1944. Silver gelatin print, measuring 10 by 7 inches. $750.
Vintage photographic print by W. Eugene Smith of Democratic delegates, with Life magazine accession number on the verso.
“A heroic figure in American photography, Smith created photo essays so compelling in their power that it can be said his work changed, as well as documented, history” (McDarrah, 457). This vintage print of the Chicago Democratic Convention shows a member of the New York delegation listening to Mrs. Farley (identified on verso), presumably the wife of James A. Farley, Postmaster General under Roosevelt.
A fine historic picture.
