SIGNED BY JAMES GARFIELD AS PRESIDENT, HIS VICE PRESIDENT (AND FUTURE PRESIDENT) CHESTER ARTHUR, THE ENTIRE CABINET, AND MORE THAN 100 MEMBERS OF CONGRESS
(GARFIELD, James). Autograph Album. [Washington, DC]: circa 1866-67. Small quarto, original dark brown calf covers with gilt borders and titling laid down over modern full calf, marbled endpapers.
Rare signature of James Garfield, signed and dated as President on May 6, 1881, in an autograph album together with Vice President Chester Arthur, Garfield's entire cabinet, and over 100 members of the House and Senate.
Garfield's presidency is one of the shortest in American history. Taking office on March 4, 1881, Garfield was shot on July 2 and finally passed on September 19. As such any items signed by Garfield during his presidency are quite scarce and desirable. In addition to Garfield and his Vice President (and future President) Chester Arthur, this album also features the signatures of Garfield's entire cabinet, including Secretary of State James G. Blaine, Secretary of the Treasury William Windom, Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln, Secretary of the Navy William H. Hunt, Postmaster General Thomas L. James, Secretary of the Interior Samuel J. Kirkwood, and Attorney General Wayne MacVeagh, each of whom have signed on a separate page. In addition the album includes the signatures of over 100 Senators and Congressmen including several veterans of the Civil War such as Ambrose Burnside and William Rosencrans. Also of interest is former Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, who adds a lengthy inscription for the owner: "Among many good mottos few are better than this line by Pope: 'Honor and Shame from no condition rise; Act well your part: there all the honor lies.' Alexander H. Stephens MC of Ga National Hotel, Washington DC, 22d May 1881."
Interior quite clean; a few minor rubs to original morocco, gilt bright. About-fine condition.
