FIRST EDITION OF J’ACCUSE, INSCRIBED BY GRAHAM GREENE

GREENE, Graham. J’Accuse. The Dark Side of Nice. London: The Bodley Head, (1982). Octavo, staple-bound as issued, original white card wrappers, original dust jacket; pp.69.

First edition of Greene’s controversial pamphlet, in English and French, inscribed on the half title: “For Peter Bentley, from a faithful guest, Graham Greene.”

With the publication of J’Accuse, “Greene turned a minor divorce question into a major international feud” (Sheldon). This pamphlet tells the story of the violent divorce and bitter custody battle between Martine Cloetta, the daughter of one of Greene’s lovers, and Daniel Guy, her mafia-connected husband. Although Martine and her children had endured physical violence and threats from Guy, the court accused her of disobedience to her husband, required her to live within 500 meters of him, barred her from working after 8 p.m., and refused to intervene when Guy kidnapped her daughter. Greene turned this work into a condemnation of the corruption within the Nice courts and criminal justice system, which he accused of protecting and siding with Guy to the detriment of Martine Cloetta and her children. J’Accuse “voiced Greene’s direct, committed political, social, religious and personal fury… his hunger to fight the victimizers of the world on behalf of the victims” (Sherry, 642). Three months after the pamphlet was published, it was banned and marked for seizure by a Nice court, and then throughout France, with Greene ordered to pay 100 francs to Daniel Guy for every copy seized. With even Greene’s most devoted publishers distancing themselves from him, only the unwavering enthusiasm of Greene’s readers saved his international career from devastation. Not in Miller. The recipient of this copy, Peter Bentley, was the owner of a pub that Greene frequented for decades. Bookseller’s ticket.

Slight crease to corner of fine book. Slightest toning to front panel of bright about-fine dust jacket. A beautiful inscribed copy.
