It Takes Heart

“WHAT WE HAVE DONE FOR OTHERS IN THE WORLD REMAINS… IMMORTAL”: FIRST EDITION OF IT TAKES HEART, INSCRIBED BY MEL ALLEN TO YANKEE EXECUTIVE AND AMERICAN LEAGUE OFFICIAL BOB FISHEL

ALLEN, Mel and GRAHAM Jr., Frank. It Takes Heart. New York: Harper & Brothers, (1959). Octavo, original half red cloth, original dust jacket.

Early edition, warmly inscribed by baseball announcer Mel Allen to his close friend and Yankee executive Bob Fishel: “To Bob— It has been said: ‘What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us— what we have done for others in the world remains and is immortal.’ To me, Bob, you are immortal. I am sincerely grateful for your warm friendship. Mel Allen.”

The book recounts the most moving moments in the careers of several prominent sports figures and includes such events as Ben Hogan’s victory in the U.S. Open, Walter Johnson’s first and last World Series performance, Jim Braddock’s triumph over Joe Louis, and Joe DiMaggio’s post-injury game against the Red Sox, during which Mel Allen first used his signature phrase, “How about that!” Smith 11103, 12107, 12258, 14683, and 16003. In addition to being a close friend of Mel Allen, the recipient of this copy, Bob Fishel, was a baseball executive for more than 40 years and a Yankee official for another 20. He made his greatest contributions as Vice President of the American League. In a eulogy for Fishel, George Steinbrenner called him “a great part of the brain trust of the American League office” and remarked that they were “going to feel the loss,” a sentiment echoed by American League President Bobby Brown, who stated, “People like Bob Fishel are never replaced.”

Book fine, with only slightest rubbing to corners. Dust jacket extremely good, with a few spots of soiling and light rubbing. A handsome inscribed copy.
