CHARLES ROBINSON’S LOVELY ILLUSTRATED RUBAIYAT
(ROBINSON, Charles) KHAYYAM, Omar. The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám. London and Glasgow: Collins, [circa 1935]. Quarto, contemporary full polished tan calf gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine label, all edges gilt.
Finely illustrated edition, with decorative borders and four fine mounted plates printed in vivid colors, beautifully bound by Bayntun-Riviere.
Robinson’s reputation was established in 1895 with his illustrations for A Child’s Garden of Verses, “an instant and enduring success” (Quayle, 126). He liked to design the entire book, “paying as much attention to binding and endpapers as to the actual illustrations. He was one of the first illustrators to have all his work reproduced photo-mechanically by line and half-tone blocks” (Carpenter & Prichard, 457).
A lovely volume in fine condition.
