Allan Gurganus’ first novel explores racial issues in the American South as dictated by 99-year-old Lucy Marsden, widow of Colonel William Marsden. It won the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Appearing on the New York Times Best Seller list for eight months, it sold over four million copies. It was made into a television play featuring Cicely Tyson, and was adapted into a one-woman play on Broadway, starring Ellen Burstyn.
