First edition of this work supporting the recognition of the 12-year-old exiled Duke of Bordeaux, Henri, as King Henry V of France, written by his drawing master, Jacques-Louis David's student Charles-Achille d'Hardiviller, with 12 full-page hors-texte lithographs by him featuring the young duke at work and play, handsomely bound in vellum by Bonnay and bearing the gilt coat of arms and armorial bookplate of the Comte de Puiseux.

A sentimental look at Henri, the 12-year-old exiled Duke of Bordeaux, through the eyes of d'Hardiviller, his drawing master. D'Hardiviller joined Henri in exile at Holyrood Castle in Scotland in 1830. Henri was the son of the Duc de Berry, who was assassinated in 1820. The legitimists attempted to situate him as Henry V, King of France, but the 1830 revolution forced Henri into exile, permanently barring him from ascending the throne. D'Hardiviller, who had studied under the famous artist David, was a staunch legitimist and, in this work, uses his art in an attempt to win sympathy for the legitimist cause. The lithographs depict the daily activities of Henri, from fencing to pistol practice to lessons to riding. In the plate of Henri's drawing lesson, he is shown with d'Hardiviller. The plates frequently depict the picturesque grounds of Holyrood Castle. Armorial bookplate of the Comte de Puiseux, bearing his coat of arms on the vellum binding in gilt and gilt fleurs-de-lis on all corners (reflecting his French royal status).

Expert paper repairs to corner of title page and rear wrapper, very faint scattered foxing and soiling to interior, minor soiling to binding. A near-fine copy with an exceptional provenance.
