REYNARDSON, C.T.S. Birch. Down the Road or Reminiscences of a Gentleman Coachman. London: Longmans, Green, 1875. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter brown morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. $350.

First edition of this account of travel by coach, with color engraved title page and 12 chromolithographic plates by H. Alken, handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf.

“Henry Alken was the premier sporting illustrator of his time. He worked in colored aquatint in a style akin to that of Rowlandson and the early George Cruikshank” (Ray, 32). Alken’s equestrian illustrations “are the result of the most attentive observation during many years entirely devoted to the pleasures of the field” (DNB). Armorial bookplate.

Plates and text generally fine, only minor wear to handsome binding.
