(ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated leaf from a Medieval Bible. England, circa 1240. Single vellum leaf, measuring 6 by 8-1/2 inches, scribed in black ink, illuminated in red and blue inks. Floated with red satin matt and window framed, entire piece measures 15-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches.
Wonderful illuminated leaf from a 13th-century English Bible, scribed in Latin and taken from Acts 9-12, with two two-line initials and two one-line numerals as well as a chapter heading, all executed in red and blue with elaborate scrollwork.
This leaf from an English bible, circa 1240, with text from Acts 9-12. It is scribed in two columns of Latin, each containing 49 lines of text in black ink with red accents. There are two larger two-line initials, one in red and one in blue ink, each with the opposite color scrollwork and long ascenders and descenders. There are also two one-line red and blue numerals and a similarly scribed heading at the top of the leaf. The verso is similar, but with only one small and one large initial.
Very nearly fine condition.
