The Queen's People

“THE QUEEN SHALL WEAR DIAMONDS AND PASS IN A GOLDEN COACH”

(BIDERMANAS, Izis) PUDNEY, John. The Queen’s People. Photographs by Izis Bidermanas. (London): Harvill, (1953). Slim quarto, original black paper-covered boards, original photographic dust jacket. $450.

First edition of this wonderful photobook on Queen Elizabeth’s coronation—“a proud time to be a Londoner”-featuring 45 finely screened photogravure plates by Izis that delightfully capture the pageantry of a city sparkling with fireworks, regimental parades and banners flying.

In the summer of 1953, with the coronation of “the young Queen Elizabeth, Britain was emerging from the dark days” of the long war. This charming, often witty remembrance of that time is illustrated by the renowned photographer Izis with 45 full-page photogravures of parades, streets lined with expectant crowds, and shops decorated with pictures of the young Queen, whose “coming to the throne brought with it a sense of continuity in a world of changing values.” Text by John Pudney. See Parr & Badger I:222. Bookseller ticket.

Book fine; very light edge-wear to price-clipped near-fine dust jacket.
