“ONE OF THE MOST INGENIOUS TACTICIANS OF HIS TIME”: BIRD’S CHESS NOVELTIES, 1895

BIRD, Henry Edward. Chess Novelties and Their Latest Developments with Comparisons of the Progress of Chess Openings of the Last Century and the Present not Dealt with in Existing Works. London and New York: Frederick Warne, 1895. Small octavo, original red pictorial cloth gilt, patterned endpapers.

First edition of Bird’s sixth and final book on chess.

“Well known for his rapidity, dash, and eccentric openings, Bird was the most popular referee of his time and answered more questions about chess than any man living… in readiness to play at a moment’s notice for stakes or no stakes, Bird had no equal” (DNB). “One of the most ingenious tacticians of his time, Bird played in the attacking style prevalent in his youth. He usually chose chess openings that were regarded as bizarre, although many of them, e.g. the dragon variation, have since gained acceptance” (Hooper & Whyld, 40). The Bird attack, Bird defense, Bird opening, and Bird variation moves were all named after him. In standard chess and notation and illustrated with diagrams.

Interior fine; light rubbing to extremities of bright cloth, toning to spine, expert repair to front joint. Scarce.
