INSCRIBED BY EDOUARD BOUBAT TO PHOTOJOURNALIST PETER TURNLEY
JAY, Bill, editor. Album 12. (Wisbech: Album Photographic, 1970). Small, slim folio, original stiff white photographic covers. $150.
First edition of the last issue of Album, devoted to Erwitt, Boubat and Gardin, inscribed on page 4, “Pour Peter, Boubat.” From the collection of award-winning photojournalist Peter Turnley, also signed by him on page 1.
Bill Jay was the first Director of Photography at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and editor of Album, which only survived for a year— 12 issues in 1970. Yet during that short time Jay published images by many significant photographers, some before their names were even recognized and often for the first time. This is the final issue of Album, featuring Elliott Erwitt, Edouard Boubat and Gianni Berengo Gardin. “Original copies of Album are rare and difficult to find” (Jay). From the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek, Life and Harper’s Magazine, who has covered “almost every important international news event of the last 15 years” (New York Times), with his signature.
Coffee stain to top corners having formerly stuck them together, archival tape repair to page [23] affecting image, light vertical coffee stains to original covers. Despite condition, a very desirable, inscribed association copy.
