"WE DID WELL TONIGHT. WE WILL GO HOME PROUD": FIRST EDITION OF MEDIUM RAW, 2010, SIGNED BY ANTHONY BOURDAIN
BOURDAIN, Anthony. Medium Raw. A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook. (New York): Ecco, (2010). Octavo, original half black and blue paper boards, original dust jacket. $1200.
First edition of Bourdain's highly anticipated sequel to Kitchen Confidential, boldly signed by him on the half title and dated 6/30/10—shortly after the release date earlier that month.
Bourdain, who died in 2018, is remembered as a man who "built his career on the telling of truth… Bourdain effectively created the 'bad-boy chef' persona, but over time he began to see its ill effects on the restaurant industry. With Medium Raw, his 2010 follow-up to Kitchen Confidential, he tried to retell his story from a place of greater wisdom: the drugs, the sex… they were not a blueprint but a cautionary tale" (New Yorker). Medium Raw won early praise for Bourdain's characteristic honesty, his "pointed critiques, astute asides… it's always personal, even when it gets political" (New York Times). He concludes the book with a brief memory of his life as a cook: "that single moment after a long and very busy night, sitting down at the bar with your colleagues… You look at each other with the intense camaraderie of people who've suffered together and think, 'We did well tonight. We will go home proud.'" With a photograph laid in of Bourdain at the signing event.
A fine signed copy.
