“THE EYE OF PARIS”: BRASSAÏ’S TRIBUTE TO HIS FRIEND HENRY MILLER, SIGNED BY BRASSAÏ
BRASSAÏ. Henry Miller: Grandeur Nature. (Paris): Gallimard, (1975). Octavo, original white stiff paper covers, original dust jacket. $1200.
First trade edition of this touching remembrance of Henry Miller, with 16 crisp photogravures of people and places from Miller’s life, signed by Brassaï on the half title.
Brassaï’s unique images of Paris and its artistic community earned him the epithet “the eye of Paris,” coined by his friend Henry Miller. “Despite all his transformation of life into a photographic image, Brassaï’s pictures were always a confession of humanity” (Stepan, 52). His expansive tribute to Miller appeared first in a limited edition of only 25 copies. Text in French.
A fine copy.
