“AN IRREPRESSIBLE CREATIVITY”: BEAUTIFUL SET OF THE BRONTËS’ NOVELS

BRONTË, Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Novels of the Sisters Brontë. Edinburgh: John Grant, 1924. Twelve volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter blue calf gilt, raised bands, tan and burgundy morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $4500.

“Thornton Edition” of the novels of the Brontë sisters, illustrated with frontispiece portraits and numerous photographic plates, handsomely bound in three-quarter morocco-gilt by Morrell.

"They had neither wealth nor power… what they did have was the vicarious experience of books and an irrepressible creativity… More than anything else, however, they had each other… Without this intense family relationship, some of the greatest novels in the English language would never have been written" (Barker, 830). This edition, first published in 1901, includes Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Shirley, Villette, and The Professor; Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights; and Anne Brontë's Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey. Also includes Elizabeth C. Gaskell's noted biography of Charlotte Brontë.

Interiors fine, a few rubs to spines, which have evenly toned to brown. A lovely set in near-fine condition.
