AUTOGRAPH LETTER INSCRIBED BY NATURALIST JOHN BURROUGHS

BURROUGHS, John. Autograph letter signed. Roxbury-in-the-Catskills, New York, July 20, 1916. One leaf, measuring 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches, writing on recto; mounted to stiff card with original mailing envelope. $700.

Autograph letter signed by naturalist John Burroughs, responding to a question about finches.

The letter, written on Burroughs' Woodchuck Lodge stationery, reads: "July 20. Dear Sir, I have rec'd yours of the 12th. I do not know the "Harris Sparrow." I have never seen it or heard it. Nearly all the finches sing occasionally on the wing and I think I have heard the indigo bird do so. I cannot make out your night songster from your account of it. Sincerely Yours, John Burroughs. Rev. Chester F. Ralson. East Northfield Mass." With the original mailing envelope, dated 1916 and with Burroughs printed return address.
