"YOUR LETTER FINDS ME LOTUS EATING UP HERE ON AN ISLAND IN RANGELEY LAKE…"
BURROUGHS, John. Autograph letter signed. One leaf, measuring 8 by 10 inches unfolded, folded into four pages, with writing on both rectos; mounted on the fourth page. $700.
Autograph letter signed by naturalist John Burroughs, written while on vacation in Maine.
The letter, written on the letterhead of Maneskootuk island in Rangeley, Maine, reads: "June 20, 1892. Dear Mr. [blank space], Your letter finds me lotus eating up here on an island in Rangeley lake. This will probably be the chief event in my life this summer. I have taken my 4 lb. trout and many other of lesser size. I am the guest of Fred S. Dickson of Phila who has an ideal place here and with Mrs. Dickson knows how to let a man enjoy himself. Later in the season I expect to go up in the Catskills for a month. I leave here this week. I have no literary work in the stocks at present. From the 20th of August to the 20th of September I expect to be busy gathering my grape harvest. Very Sincerely John Burroughs."
Fold lines. An excellent letter.
