"THERE IS AN UNEXPECTED, AN UNEXPLAINED LURE AND ATTRACTION IN THE LANDSCAPE,—A PENSIVE, REMINISCENT FEELING IN THE AIR ITSELF. NATURE HAS GROWN MELLOW UNDER THESE HUMID SKIES, AS IN OUR FIERCER CLIMATE SHE GROWS HARSH AND SEVERE": LENGTHY ORIGINAL WORKING MANUSCRIPT BY JOHN BURROUGHS OF "NATURE IN ENGLAND," THE FIRST CHAPTER OF FRESH FIELDS

BURROUGHS, John. Autograph manuscript. No place, circa 1883. Octavo, 92 1/2 pages (most written on one side of sheet), bound in early three-quarter morocco. $6500.

Original working manuscript of Burroughs' essay "Nature in England," his account of a trip to England, published in his 1884 collection of essays Fresh Fields.

Before being published in Fresh Fields, "Nature in England" appeared in Century magazine in November 1883. Numbering over ninety pages, this working manuscript is comprised of the entire published essay with the exception of half of the final page. Numerous words and phrases are crossed out and corrected in Burroughs' hand, or crossed out without corrections, with occasional marginal jottings.

Several pages have sections pasted together, first two leaves stained with repairs to chipping at edges, remainder of leaves very sound and clean with occasional smudges. Very good condition.
