"I WANT A WHITE APRON WITH A POCKET": FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY BELOVED CHILDREN'S AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATOR ERIC CARLE
CARLE, Eric. My Apron. New York: Philomel Books, (1994). Quarto, original laminated pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers. $500.
First edition of Carle's colorful tribute to his uncle, signed by him on the copyright page opposite the title page, with original child-sized apron in plastic pocket affixed to the rear board.
Carle found inspiration for My Apron in his own childhood experience helping his uncle with masonry work and in a painting of laborers by French modernist Fernard Léger. "Clearly conveys the warmth between the man and his nephew and the child's satisfaction in a job well done" (School Library Journal). Includes the uncommon original apron sold with the book, here in excellent, unused condition.
Faint spotting to outer edge of rear free endpaper, otherwise bright and fresh. A fine copy.
