Limited first edition of this illustrated catalogue, one of 1250 copies, signed by Marc Chagall on the title page. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and friend of Chagall.
The catalogue from an exhibition at Galerie Gérard Cramer in Geneva of the works of Matisse, illustrated throughout in black and white, with seven full-page full-color plates of Chagall's work. With a laid in price list and card announcing the upcoming exhibition. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and close friend of Chagall. Liverant and Chagall both fled Europe in World War II, Liverant to Canada and Chagall to the United States. After the war, both acquired residences in Provence, where shared social circles, similar ages, and a mutual love of Yiddish combined to forge a lasting bond of friendship between the two. With a presentation card offering the catalogue "with the compliments" of gallery owner Gérald Cramer laid in.
