First edition of this illustrated catalogue, signed on the title page by Marc Chagall.
The catalogue from an exhibition of Chagall's works at the famed Fondation Maeght in Provence, not far from Chagall's own residence a few miles away, that featured works Chagall did in 1977 to illustrated a previously unpublished work by Andre Malraux, Et Sur La Terre, about Malraux's experiences fighting for the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. With front cover color illustration and 3 color plates of Chagall's work, in addition to numerous black-and-white illustrations. Text in French. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and close friend of Chagall. Liverant and Chagall both fled Europe in World War II, Liverant to Canada and Chagall to the United States. After the war, both acquired residences in Provence, where shared social circles, similar ages, and a mutual love of Yiddish combined to forge a lasting bond of friendship between the two.
