THE FIRST MODERN GEOLOGY TEXTBOOK

LYELL, Charles. Elements of Geology. Philadelphia; Pittsburgh: James Kay, Jun. and Brother; C.H. Kay & Co., 1839. Octavo, original brown cloth.

First American edition of the first modern textbook of geology, with hand-colored engraved frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations.

A condensation and popularization of Lyell’s classic work, Principles of Geology, “the Elements is a model of simple, lucid exposition… it was the first modern textbook of geology written on the assumption that geological phenomena could be explained completely in terms of natural and knowable causes” (DSB). Of his friend and mentor, Darwin wrote, “The science of geology is enormously indebted to Lyell—more, as I believe, than to any other man who ever lived” (DNB). First published in London in 1838. See Norman 1399. Occasional penciled marginalia; a few penciled annotations to front endpapers erased.

Foxing to text, inner hinges expertly reinforced, a bit of wear to spine ends and corners. Very good in original cloth.
