THE AMERICAN GRAPE GROWER'S GUIDE, IN ORIGINAL CLOTH

CHORLTON, William. The American Grape Grower's Guide. New York: Orange Judd, circa 1870. Octavo, original brown cloth.

Early edition of this detailed and highly influential guide to growing grapes in the United States, with 32 in-text illustrations, in original cloth-gilt.

"Chorlton's guides to cultivation of European grapes under glass were based on his experiences as gardener to J.C. Green of Staten Island. Chorlton gives a long list of European grapes suitable for indoor cultivation and suggests the American varieties isabella, catawba, diana and concord for outdoors. This was a very popular treatise and there were numerous subsequent and revised editions" (Gabler G1622). The first edition was published in 1852.

Interior generally fine with only a few instances of marginal foxing; cloth clean and tight, spine toned. An extremely good copy.
