SIGNED AND DATED BY AARON COPLAND
COPLAND, Aaron. First Symphony For Large Orchestra. New York: Cos Cob Press Inc., circa 1930. Folio, original wrappers, pp.80. $600.
Early edition, full score of the arrangement for orchestra alone, signed and dated (1983) on the title page by Aaron Copland.
Composed for Copland's teacher Nadia Boulanger for her 1925 American tour, Symphony for Organ and Orchestra established Copland as a major composer. "He cultivated his own 'idea of the grandiose, of the dramatic and the tragic, which was expressed to a certain extent in the Organ Symphony… the deliberate Americanism and the grandiosity were characteristics that recurred in various guises and various combinations throughout his later works" (New Grove 4: 719). This arrangement, for orchestra alone, was produced by Copland in 1928. The recipient of this copy was Phillip Ramey, a composer and writer who was also one of Copland's closest friends. Rental slip pocket on interior rear wrapper.
Interior fine; wrappers with some wear, including mild losses to spine.
