THE CHINESE, ILLUSTRATED 1836 FIRST EDITION, BY THE BRITISH GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG

(CHINA) DAVIS, John Francis. The Chinese: a General Description of the Empire of China and Its Inhabitants. London: Charles Knight, 1836. Two volumes. Small octavo, modern full tan polished calf gilt.

First edition of this 19th-century survey of the Chinese Empire and its people—one of the first of its kind in English—by the second British Governor of Hong Kong, illustrated with 54 full-page and in-text wood engravings. Attractively bound in Rangoon by Maung Ba Nyein.

Written at a crucial time in Anglo-Chinese relations, when China was first beginning to open to the West, by a key player in the negotiations with the Chinese, who also lived most of his life in that country. Sir John Francis Davis (1795-1890), first baronet, was the son of the director of the East India Company from 1810-19. “He early showed marked linguistic and diplomatic abilities, and in consequence was chosen to accompany Lord Amherst on his unfortunate embassy to Peking in 1816. On the return of the mission Davis again took up his duties at Canton, and in 1832 was promoted to be president of the East India Company’s factory at that port. Two years later he was appointed joint commissioner in China with Lord Napier. After many years of trying service he returned to England on furlough, his leave happening to synchronize with the war, and in 1844 he was gazetted British plenipotentiary and chief superintendent of British trade in China, as well as governor and commander-in-chief of the colony of Hong Kong. On 18 July 1845 he was created a baronet” (DNB). With 420 pages in Volume I; 489 in Volume II; reprints from the same year have 395 pages in Volume I; 459 in Volume II.

A few neat ink underlinings. Attractively bound.
