DICKENS' LETTERS, HANDSOMELY BOUND BY LARKIN
DICKENS, Charles. The Letters of Charles Dickens. Edited by his Sister-in-Law and His Eldest Daughter. London: Chapman and Hall, 1880-82. Three volumes. Octavo, early three-quarter red morocco, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $2500.
First edition of this collection of Dickens' letters, edited by his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth and his eldest daughter Mamie Dickens, handsomely bound by Larkin.
Although the title pages of the first two volumes indicated a two-volume set, the introduction to the third edition notes that after publication, they received many other letters from Dickens' correspondents, in particular from Lord Lytton, "which we were unable to procure in time for our first two volumes in consequence of his son's absence in India." With errata slips in each volume. Original cloth bound in rear.
Just a bit of scattered foxing. Handsomely bound.
