"I HAD A FARM IN AFRICA, AT THE FOOT OF THE NGONG HILLS…": FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF DINESEN'S CLASSIC

(DINESEN, Isak) BLIXEN, Karen. Out of Africa. London: Putnam, (1937). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

Very scarce first edition in English of Dinesen's famous account of her experiences in Africa, preceding the American edition by one year. With rare publisher's four-page illustrated prospectus laid in.

Dinesen was born in Denmark but wrote both in English and Danish, and her books usually appeared simultaneously in both languages. She "married her cousin, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, in 1914. They ran a coffee plantation in Kenya, which she continued to manage after her divorce; the story of this failed enterprise is told in Out of Africa… written after her return to Denmark in 1931" (Drabble, 109). Publisher's four-page prospectus for the novel laid in.

Book fine, dust jacket with a touch of wear to corners and faint toning, far less than often seen. A lovely, near-fine copy, scarce in this condition.
