INSCRIBED BY BOBBY LAYNE
LAYNE, Bobby with DRUM, Bob. Always on Sunday. Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey: Prentice-Hall, (1962). Octavo, original green paper-covered boards, original dust jacket.
First edition of this “inside story of professional football by the game’s most controversial star,” illustrated with eight pages of photographs and inscribed on the half title, “With Best Wishes, Bobby Layne.”
“In Always on Sunday, Bobby Layne tells of his exploits, both on and off the field, that have made him the most colorful player in the game.” Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, they traded him to Chicago, where he played under coaching legend George Halas and was the third-string quarterback behind Sid Luckman and Johnny Lujack. In 1950 Layne was traded to the Detroit Lions. Before rejoining the Steelers in 1958, Layne had quarterbacked the Lions to three NFL championships. As he left Detroit, stunned and hurt by the trade, he is said to have cursed the Lions for 50 years: “I’d like to win a championship for the Steelers and for myself to shove down Detroit’s throat.”
Book fine, dust jacket with a few closed tears, light wear to extremities. An extremely good copy.
