Historie of Edward the Fourth, King of England

1640 FIRST EDITION OF HISTORIE OF EDWARD THE FOURTH

HABINGTON, William. The Historie of Edward the Fourth. London: Printed by Tho. Cotes, for William Cooke, 1640. Small folio, contemporary calf rebacked, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine.

First edition of Habington’s important history, with engraved frontispiece portrait.

Habington’s Historie documents the turbulent reign of Edward IV, King of England from 1461 to 1483. The defeat of Henry IV and the crowning of Edward IV in 1461 were pivotal events in the “War of the Roses,” transferring the crown from the House of Lancaster to the House of York. At Edward’s death in 1483, his sons, known as the “Princes in the Tower,” disappeared and his brother, Richard III, seized the throne. William Habington’s father Thomas began this work while confined in the Tower for his part in the Catholic conspiracy on behalf of Mary Queen of Scots against Elizabeth I; William completed the work and published it at Charles I’s request in 1640. STC 12586. Contemporary owner signature and occasional marginalia.

Title page with early repair to corner (margins only). A lovely, wide-margined copy, handsomely bound.
