Waging Peace

“A LESSON LEARNED, A PRINCIPLE PROVED, OR AN OLD TRUTH EMPHASIZED”: PRESENTATION COPY OF EISENHOWER’S WAGING PEACE, INSCRIBED BY BOTH IKE AND MAMIE ON CHRISTMAS

EISENHOWER, Dwight D. Waging Peace 1956-1961. Garden City: Doubleday, 1965. Thick octavo, original tan cloth, cartographic endpapers, original acetate.

Signed limited first edition, scarce presentation/association copy, one of a very small number set aside for Eisenhower without the statement of limitation and the tipped-in signed leaf, containing a printed bookplate tipped to the half title, displaying the Eisenhowers’ Pennsylvania farm, containing the personalized typescript of “Publication date October 14, 1965… For Nettie Jones” and warmly inscribed by Eisenhower, “Merry Christmas! With affectionate regard from her devoted friends Mamie and Ike.”

This is the second of Eisenhower’s books about his presidency, covering the years of his second term. It is one of a very small number of the signed limited first edition to be issued without the limitation statement: set aside for Eisenhower to present to family and close friends. Without scarce slipcase. This memorable presentation/association copy is inscribed to the Eisenhowers’ longtime close friend Nettie Jones, wife of wealthy industrialist W. Alton “Pete” Jones, who was one of a select and trusted inner circle chosen by Eisenhower to advise him on key political decisions. In addition, as “the chairman of the executive committee of the Cities Service Company, Jones was a close friend and frequent golfing and quail-shooting companion of Eisenhower” (New York Times). In Waging Peace, Eisenhower writes of golfing with Jones in Scotland on a “stolen holiday” shortly before a planned 1959 summit meeting with Kruschev (431). Alton Jones was killed in a plane crash in 1962 while on route to join Eisenhower on a fishing trip.

A fine copy.
