"IT IS A HARD WORLD FOR ANY BUT THE MOST RUGGED IN ART"
FROST, Robert. Autograph letter signed. Amherst, Massachusetts, January 14, 1928. One leaf, measuring 10 by 6-1/2 inches, folded into four pages, writing in ink on first side only; mounted to a leaf measuring 7 by 9-1/2 inches. $1800.
Autograph letter signed by Robert Frost discussing his qualms about offering an opinion on the poetry of a "sensitive invalid."
The letter reads in full: Dear Dr. Allen: I must read the poems of course though I am almost afraid to judge the work of a sensitive invalid—the danger is so great that I may not like it. If I don't, shall I tell the truth where a doctor perhaps wouldn't? I suppose I could tell you the truth and you could tell the patient what you saw fit. It is a hard world for any but the most rugged in art. Thanks for the kindness of your letter. Sincerely yours Robert Frost. Amherst Mass January 14, 1828." Mounted to a leaf—possibly from a scrapbook—with another leaf on the verso with a "side elevation" drawing of a house.
Fine condition.
