THE WORKS OF JOHN HALL-STEVENSON
HALL-STEVENSON, John. The Works. London: J. Debrett and T. Beckett, 1795. Three volumes. Octavo, late 19th-century three-quarter tan calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red and blue morocco spine labels, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $1500.
First collected edition, handsomely bound.
A close friend of Sterne, Hall-Stevenson specialized in racy tales modeled on La Fontaine’s Contes, the most well-known being his Crazy Tales, all set at Crazy Castle, which in turn was based on his own residence, Skelton Castle.
A lovely set in fine condition.
