HEPBURN, Katharine. Autograph letter signed. [Spain]: October 15, (1970). One page of lined paper, 8-1/2 by 10-3/4 inches. $4500.
Autograph letter from Katharine Hepburn to her friend Meta Stern, written while filming "The Trojan Women," with great film-making content, signed "K-."
Hepburn wrote this letter to Meta Stern, long time friend and correspondent, while filming in Spain. It reads in full: "Dear Meta – Got your letter – it is such a treat to have a word & you are sweet to bother. Here we are coming to the end – a week from this Sat we had a run of bad weather & jumped from the middle of Helen to the dead boy. In the first 5 1/2 min take of Hecuba's scene with the boy the close up camera – the film broke in the first 10 sec. We found this out at the end of the day having thought we had got a great take – thought Cacoyannis (Michael Cacoyannis, Greek director of The Trojan Women) was going to have a stroke – but we got a good one – shot the next day. Now Helen & Menelaus are done & we will burn Troy – it has been very tough, but very interesting – a nice group & I think Cacoyannis has done a fine job. The location – brutal – but thrilling on the screen – we've been lucky with the weather – Love K-" Written while on location in Spain in 1970 while filming The Trojan Women with co-stars Vanessa Redgrave, Irene Pappas, and Genevieve Bujold. The movie premiered in September 1971 to favorable reviews. Recipient Meta Stern (1925-59) was a Hollywood script supervisor who worked on many blockbuster films, including the 1936 release Mary of Scotland, starring Katharine Hepburn.
