“WARMING TO THE HEART AND NOURISHING TO THE SPIRIT”: ILLUSTRATED GOOD-BYE MR. CHIPS, SIGNED BY HILTON AND BROCK
HILTON, James. Good-bye, Mr. Chips. Illustrations by H. M. Brock. Boston: Little, Brown, 1935. Octavo, original cream and brown paper boards, uncut, original numbered slipcase. $800.
Signed limited “Birthday” edition, number 593 of 600, signed by Hilton and the illustrator, H.M. Brock.
Hilton wrote Mr. Chips at a time when British public schools were under fire, and his defense of traditionalism seemed reassuring to most. "There has just been published in this country a tender and gentle story as warming to the heart and as nourishing to the spirit as any I can remember…" (Alexander Woollcott, contemporary review in the New Yorker). Mr. Chips became a 1939 box-office-hit movie, starring Robert Donat and Greer Garson. Without scarce original glassine. The first edition was published in 1934; the illustrated edition was first published in 1935.
Some mild toning and discoloration to slipcase; book fine.
