ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITION: HOLST’S MASTERPIECE, THE PLANETS
HOLST, Gustav. The Planets… Full Orchestral Score. (London): Goodwin & Tabb Ltd., [1921]. Folio, original half cloth and printed paper boards.
First edition of the full score, number 120 of only 200 copies.
In 1914, Holst wrote: “As a rule I only study things that suggest music to me. That’s why I worried at Sanskrit. Then recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me, and I have been studying astrology fairly closely” (Holst Catalogue, 121). Holst’s interest was in the astrological associations of the planets rather than the Greco-Roman gods: Jupiter is characterized as “The Bringer of Jollity,” Neptune as “The Mystic,” and so forth. “The first informal performance of The Planets on 29 September 1918 was a present to Holst from his friend and patron Balfour Gardiner… The invited audience at that private performance were astounded to hear such a work by an English composer… During the many years since it was written The Planets has suffered from being quoted in snippets as background music, but in spite of all unwanted associations it has survived as a masterpiece, owing to the strength of Holst’s invention” (New Grove 8: 663). Holst 125. This copy from the library of Norman Del Mar, the musicologist and conductor, with his inscription dated Christmas 1942 on the flyleaf, and gift inscription (signed “M.”) on title page: “To Norman for coming out 2nd in the A. C. Chamber Music Competition.” Erasures to flyleaf and title page.
Light wear to original publisher’s cloth and boards. An extremely good and desirable copy of the very scarce first edition.
