1846 edition of Julia Corner’s popular 19th-century history of China and India, with folding maps of China and India, illustrated with 31 tinted lithographic plates (including title page) and numerous in-text wood engravings, a splendid copy beautifully bound in publisher’s full morocco with gilt vignettes on both ornately gilt-stamped boards.

Julia Corner authored some of the leading histories of the 19th century, the popularity of which endured long past her death through the turn of the 20th century. Written in two parts, the first focusing on China and the second on India, this handsomely illustrated work offers extensive information on subjects such as Confucius, the building of the Great Wall, various dynasties, cultural practices and manners, the many invasions of India, the establishment of the British empire in India, and much more. Preceded by The Pictorial History of India and China, published by Dean. With pictorial “undated title at the front, lithographed; India occupies pages (197) to 393” (Abbey 468). Containing two folding maps, 31 full-page tinted lithographs, including frontispiece, and numerous in-text wood-cut engraved illustrations. Imprint of “Dean and Son, Printers, Threadneedle-Street” (402). Contemporary gift inscription dated 1850.
