King's Views of New York

FIRST EDITION OF KING’S VIEWS OF NEW YORK, 1903

KING, Moses. King’s Views of New York. New York: Sackett & Wilhelms, (1903). Folio, original publisher’s olive green cloth gilt, beveled boards, contemporary cardboard case.

First edition, featuring over 400 illustrations of New York City most classic buildings, churches and universities at the turn of the century, including 200 photogravures by noted photographer Irving Underhill.

Moses King began to chronicle New York in the late 1890s with his lavishly illustrated views of a city poised to become the world’s leading business and cultural center. This scarce first edition of the 1903 King’s Views of New York celebrates the 250th anniversary of the city’s chartering and features an artist’s view of St. John’s Cathedral, then under construction, on its title page. With over 400 illustrations and photographs of the city, including images of major buildings, churches, banks, the Stock Exchange, universities, bridges and parks, along with expansive views of projected buildings, such as the full-page artist’s conception of a municipal center on Chambers Street, and numerous panoramic views, including that of a festive Coney Island. First edition in publisher’s cloth, appearing coincident with first edition in leather; vintage cardboard case with hand-lettered title, interior owner stamps. Gift inscription dated year of publication.

Images fine, two signatures lightly detaching but still intact; original gilt publisher’s cloth with light soiling, edge-wear to extremities; tape reinforcement to edges of original publisher’s cardboard case. A handsome, near-fine copy.
