The publication of Tommyknockers led The New York Times to single out King's unique ability as a storyteller, noting that whether "King is… saying 'EEEOOOOOOARRRGHMMMMMMM!' or 'Hurts! It hurrrr-… or quoting Moby-Dick, we believe him." Widely considered "King at his best" (San Francisco Chronicle), this is "an incredibly scary story—you will not be able to put this down" (Los Angeles Times Book Review).
