"THE BEST AND BEST KNOWN": LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF THE SEARCHERS, 1954, ONE OF ONLY 800 COPIES SIGNED BY LE MAY

LE MAY, Alan. The Searchers. New York: Harper & Brothers, (1954). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

Signed limited first edition, one of 800 unnumbered copies signed by Le May on a tipped-in leaf, reserved for friends of the author and publisher, basis for director John Ford's immortal Western starring John Wayne, especially scarce in the original dust jacket.

Novelist and screenwriter Alan LeMay is particularly remembered for "the best and best known of all his books…The Searchers," which was adapted to the screen by legendary director John Ford in his 1956 Western starring John Wayne and Natalie Wood (Smiley, 185). One of Ford's most heralded films, The Searchers is "a riveting, tragic and complex experience, a movie… that beautifully relates the landscape to its theme" (Thomson, 313-4). The American Film Institute placed The Searchers in its first 12 (of 100) American films and named it the top Western. With "First Edition H-D" on copyright page; first issue dust jacket with $3.00 price on front flap. "Eight hundred copies were signed on a tipped-in sheet especially produced for presentation to friends of the author in the book trade" (Smiley, 187).

Book fine, dust jacket with mild toning to spine, slightest wear to head of spine. An excellent signed copy.
