FIRST EDITION OF DODSWORTH IN RARE ORIGINAL, UNRESTORED DUST JACKET

LEWIS, Sinclair. Dodsworth. New York: Harcourt, Brace, (1929). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, in scarce, unrestored dust jacket.

“Next to Arrowsmith, this book is considered Lewis’ finest effort as a writer” (Pastore, 165). “The excellent Dodsworth, unique for Lewis in that it is not overtly satiric, depicts a well-meaning man’s difficulty in choosing between two women… Dodsworth is able to experience for himself the contrast between the New World and the Old and reluctantly, but with conviction, changes his life, his goals, and his wife-as Lewis did at the same time” (Pribic, 243). First edition, with “Published March, 1929” and no subsequent numeral on copyright page. Scarce first issue dust jacket, without reviews on front flap; “difficult to find in a dustwrapper in collectible condition” (Pastore, 165). Pastore 15. Bruccoli & Clark III:215.

Book fine; lightest chipping to spine ends of bright, unrestored dust jacket. An exceptional, about-fine copy.
