NEWELL, Gordon. SMITH, Allen E. Mighty Mo. The U.S.S. Missouri. A Biography of the Last Battleship. Seattle: Superior Publishing, (1969). Quarto, full navy leatherette gilt.

Limited first edition, number 9 of 2500 copies, illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs, many full-page. This copy inscribed by the co-author, Vice Admiral Allan E. Smith.

The fourth and final battleship built by the United States Navy, the Missouri, or the “Mighty Mo,” supported the Iwo Jima invasion as well as raids on Japan’s home islands, and served as the site of the Japanese surrender ceremony on September 2, 1945. This copiously illustrated volume recounts the ship’s action-packed history in World War II and the Korean War. Numerous black-and-white photographs depict the ship in battle and at rest, her armaments, commanders and crew, as well as aerial views of combat. During the Korean War, the Missouri was the flagship of co-author Vice Admiral Allan E. Smith, who has signed this copy.

Interior fine. Front joint expertly repaired. A handsome, inscribed copy.
