Second edition, with 47 chromolithographs mounted on 26 plates, with the first four plates of mixed tints and the rest of watercolors by Aaron Penley.
A wonderful mix of text and mounted sample illustrations, this instructional work explains the colors in a standard palette and how to use them to create watercolor landscapes. A watercolor painter in ordinary to William IV and Queen Adelaide, Penley taught in various schools and was a specialist in the painting style of the era. The first edition of this work was published in 1861. Contemporary owner signature (dated 1870).
