Exercises in Economic Analysis

FIRST EDITION OF JOAN ROBINSON’S EXERCISES IN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, 1960

ROBINSON, Joan. Exercises in Economic Analysis. London: Macmillan, 1960. Octavo, original navy paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of this revolutionary economics textbook meant to teach students how to arrive at propositions in economic theory so that they can develop their own.

In this wholly unusual textbook divided into five parts, Joan Robinson shows the process behind arriving at five important economic theories ranging from general equilibrium in supply and demand to value and distribution in a private enterprise economy. Robinson’s goal is not to act as a teacher instructing students in these particular theories (though she does that admirably), but rather to show students how to develop their own substantiated theories so that they may go on to contribute in useful ways to the community of economists. “In 1931, Joan Robinson belonged to the little ‘circus’ that helped John Maynard Keynes to make the transition from A Treatise on Money to the General Theory. She became an ardent left-wing Keynesian of the first hour. But Keynes, Robinson soon realized, was not going to revolutionize capitalism… Robinson conceived the plan of extending the short-run Keynesian system to the long run, thus developing it into a theory of economic growth” (Niehans, 304). Book near-fine, with light soiling to front endpapers. Dust jacket near-fine, with only minor rubbing to extremities and mild toning to spine. A handsome copy.
