First edition of a collection of hundreds of quotes from Rogers' writings throughout his career, inscribed by him on the colophon in the year of publication, "For C— & M— R— & R— with kindest regards, Fred Rogers 1994."
Fred Rogers, who died in 2003, was "one of America's most beloved figures." As creator and host of television's Mister Rogers Neighborhood, "he often said he was guided by listening to children… by providing answers to children's questions and addressing their uncertainties in their expanding world, he sought to aid their emotional development as individuals" (Washington Post). In You Are Special, which he dedicates "to all the children—of any age," Roger writes: "There is continuity that goes through the generations… there has never been a time in our history when there have been so many changes. But we all have different gifts and different ways of saying to the world who we are. The world needs a sense of worth, and it will achieve it only by its people feeling they are worthwhile." The book, which brings together hundreds of passages from his "speeches, songs, newspaper columns, books and television programs," is arranged in sections on subjects such as "Childhood," "Parenthood" and "Learning." Featured are lyrics to many beloved songs, such as "The Truth Will Make Me Free," which says: "What if I could know the truth, and say just how I feel? I think I'd learn a lot's that's real about freedom." In 2019 Tom Hanks portrayed him in the film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
