“THE WHOLE ENGLISH-READING WORLD WAITED FOR ANOTHER BOOK FROM THE SAME PEN”: 1820 FIRST EDITION OF IVANHOE, HANDSOMELY BOUND

SCOTT, Walter. Ivanhoe; A Romance. Edinburgh: Archibald Constable, 1820. Three volumes. 12mo, late-19th century full diced brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, green morocco spine labels, marbled edges.

Scarce first edition, first issue, of Scott’s classic novel of chivalry in the age of Richard the Lionheart and Robin Hood, his “culminating success… marked the highest point both of his literary and social prosperity.”

After the success of Scott’s Waverley, “the whole English-reading world waited for another book from the same pen. Ivanhoe appeared… [and] was ‘Scott’s culminating success in a book-selling sense, and marked the highest point both of his literary and social prosperity” (Grolier 100 71). First issue, with all first issue points, one of the first 6000 copies printed and sent to London for sale. Bound with all fly-titles, without half titles (except half title for Volume III, which is present) or advertisements, as often. Todd & Bowden 140Aa. With 10 engraved plates by Charles Heath, after drawings by Richard Westall. Heath “received instruction in engraving from his father… He proved an apt pupil, helping to carry to perfection the style of small plates for book illustration initiated by his father… His small plates for the numerous popular editions of English classics are executed with great taste and delicacy” (DNB). Binder’s ticket in Volume I.

Occasional light foxing, closed tears, creasing. Rear inner paper hinge of Volume I partially split, binding sound. Mild rubbing to binding. A very handsome copy in excellent condition.
