A COLLECTION OF MUSIC FROM GUITARIST ANDRÉS SEGOVIA'S PERSONAL LIBRARY, MANY INSCRIBED TO HIM

(SEGOVIA, Andrés) CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO, Mario, LUNA, Adolfo V., SAENZ, Pedro A., STINGL, Anton, et al. Archive of music from Segovia's library. Various places, various dates. $4500.

An extensive collection of music from Andés Segovia's personal music library, including pieces in manuscript, mechanically reproduced, and fully published, many of the pieces inscribed to Segovia by the composer, lyricist or publisher.

Largely self-taught, Segovia was faced early in his musical career with a general disbelief in the seriousness of classical guitar, a problem he felt was caused by a lack in quality of the available repertory. One response was to seek out pieces either originally written for the lute or capable of being arranged for guitar (he himself arranged works by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and Chopin, among others); the other path was to commission new works. Along with his fame and virtuosity, it was this conscious expansion on his part of the repertory that meant that "the renaissance of the classical guitar is largely attributable to Segovia" (New Grove 17:106). This extensive archive of works from Segovia's personal library demonstrates his commitment to seeking out compositions old and new.
